Mommio: Art Class- Impressionists- Degas

The last day of Degas- it's been a great little unit study for our art class and the kids have really learned more about how to capture the human body in motion!  Last Friday we were so lucky to be invited to Harmony School of Creative Arts in Marble Falls to sit in on a ballet class and sketch.  The class we visited was made up of girls in the 8-10 year range who were practicing for their role in the Nutcracker this year.  One of the girls in the class is our homeschool friend, Grace.  It was fun to watch the girls and the kids all did some nice sketching in class.  Avery also took some photos while we were there so that we could use both the sketches, and the photos to create our chalk drawings in class today.

Before starting today we watched this short video about the ballet steps that were found in Degas' own sketchbooks.

Each of the kids then used their own sketches and Avery's photos in class as inspiration for watercolor
ballerina portraits.

Here are the finished ballerinas.  Beautiful!

Now we move on to a new artist (Rodin) and an in depth study of human hands in art.
