Avery: Blog Of The Day

Thanksgiving was started by Abraham Lincon on November 26, 1863, during the Civil War.  Mr. Lincon made it so that Thanksgiving was a national holiday all around the U.S.  Thanksgiving is now one of the major holidays, along with Christmas and New Year.  The New England Colinists celebrate Thanksgiving (or Day of Prayers) to thank god for something like military victory or the end of a drought.
Thanksgiving was created when the native americans and the pilgrims finally came to peace with each other and stopped fighting over land.  They would argue over who gets what and where their land belongs.   But Thanksgiving was created because they decided to share their land, crops, food, and that sort of stuff.  They would thank each other for getting along and giving each other their items.  That is how Thanksgiving got it's name.
The people of the civil war had to take a little brake for Thanksgiving.  They would start their morning off with a shooting match (or challenge).  They would do so for the feast.  They needed to hunt for their food, but wanted to do it a fun way (of course).  The main prizes, of course, were geese and turkeys.  Then they would help around their local churches.  They would help clean, prepare things, etc.  And at the end of the day, they would have a feast.  They would have a normal one like people do now.  With turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, they even had some strange foods that they thought of.  For example; pigeon pie!  The first Thanksgiving feast lasted for three whole days.  Everyone there would dress up all fancy and pretty, in nice, fantastic dresses and suits.
