He think he left the zoo because he didn't like the habitat he was in.  I think he didn't like that he was in a cage and he didn't have a lot of space to move around.  He thought he would have a better life if he left because he would be free.  He figured out that when he left he had no food and nothing to do so he figured out that it was worse out of the zoo.  He was happy at the end because he could go back to the zoo, because he didn't like the life and of the zoo and now he has people to see him and other monkeys to play with and he has food.  I think the author is saying that some people can't always get what they want and they should go back to what they were doing.
