Mommio: Art Class

This week in art class we continued our DaVinci study by looking at some sketches of his many inventions and then sketching out some of our own using the same note-taking methods we learned last week.  We looked at these:

Elder especially liked these inventions since so many of them involved weapons!
And we all worked together to guess the inventions in Leonardo's Mystery Machine game.  After our discussion the kids all got to work creating their own inventions.
Connor invented an electronic arm that can be attached to a person's torso to give the person a third hand.  He also invented a Robotic Trojan War.
Mason invented a helmet that can make your wishes come true.  But, he made sure to include a mood indicator so that if you are unhappy and having bad thoughts the helmet will not make those come true.  Smart boy!
Avery invented a treehouse that looks normal on the outside and is a virtual mansion on the inside.  Elevator and all.
Gabe's invention is a blow party popper.  A combo of the traditional party blower that explodes like a party popper at the end.
Lily invited a new type of bird feeder that involves a pinecone.
Marney invented an electric house, a house made completely out of electricity.
Kiki invented a Blue Bunny Dinosaur (which is a toy).
Over the next two weeks the kids are going to build models of their inventions for homework.  It will be really interesting to see what they come up with.  In the next class we will move on to learning how to paint like DaVinci.

Connor: Doom Chapter 3

I stood there looking ahead to see what lie within my path.  I saw only one thing in my way, a gate with a gigantic dog blocking it.  As I stood looking at the great beast the man from the raft said "Cerberus, don't attack anyone at all and the master will give you steak."  Cerberus's eyes lit up. I'm pretty sure he was thinking "Steak. I love steak. It is better with blood"  Oh man, Cerberus was happy so many men and women were going to his master's domain.  I walked up to Cerberus and the dog licked my face as though it had seen me before.  I walked up to him and scratched him behind the ears with my sword, which surprisingly didn't harm it.  I walked through the gate saying farewell to my new canine friend, or fiend, which ever you think suits the lovable creature.  Suddenly I found myself looking around this land. So this was the realm of Hades.  I thought of eating one of the fruits sacred to Hades, but found quickly that my hand phased through it.  I walked up to a palace of dark limestone and found two big golden thrones and in one was Hades himself.  I looked at him. He was gray with flaming hair and he looked thrilled to see another dead man in his humble home, as he called it.  I told him that I was a Greek by the name of Achilles.  The lord of the dead glared at me, looking like he wanted to torture me.  He asked me if I thought what I had done in life was wrong.  I asked "Why sir, what in your realm are you talking about?"  As it would turn out I knew exactly what he was speaking of.  In life I had driven my chariot in a circle dragging Hector's maimed body behind me.  "For this" said his lordship "I torture you to the same fate as his body, Hector ready my chariot and horses."   Before he could get the vehicle ready and tie me to it I ran to the new friend I had just met.  I jumped on Cerberus's back and he defended me from his master.  Finally Hades decided that if I got off his dog's back he wouldn't torture me.  I got down and told Cerberus to stop fighting his master.  Soon I noticed that I had just gained a powerful new enemy, one that made all my other rivals look like weaklings.  I knew I was severely doomed and that Hades would stop at nothing to kill me.

Connor: Blog Of The Day

Adopting monkeys is a terrible idea.  The only good thing about it is it makes the people happy.   Look, the civilized world is no place for a simian unless it is in the zoo or a nice wild life refuge.  Our civilization just isn't a monkey's natural habitat.  Monkeys should either be allowed to roam free in the jungles of Africa or the zoos of every country, but not in the streets and not in human homes.  Humans are kidnapping these wild animals and sending the all over the country.  Monkeys may look cute, but can be very dangerous in that they could bite, kick, hit or scream/screech- the last of these would severely damage your ears.  In conclusion you may have to be half mad to want a simian in your home after reading something like this.

Gabe: Blog Of The Day

I think it is a bad idea to get monkeys because they are a wild animals.  The good thing about it is you feel like you have more babies. The bad thing is it could rip off your face. I don't think it is safe because it could kill you.

Avery: Blog Of The Day

Okay... I think people would really want the monkeys because they make the owners happy. It a good idea and a bad idea to get a monkey as a pet. The good things are that they make you happy, you are not lonely, it's like having another child  that won't grow up much. Also you get someone to be with. Even if you are married and you are alone at your house you sometimes want someone to talk to. A monkey is a good choice. But... they can still attack you. They can bite, scratch, hit and kick you. Another bad thing about having a pet monkey is that  you have to train it to be good. It's like teaching a baby... but it's much harder. I think it would be okay to adopt a monkey because they are really cool and fun. Oh... just so you know, I want a pet monkey when I grow up. I am going to train it all the time. Even if it stays on my arm.
I'm going to dress mine up when it's a little baby.

Marney: Blog Of The Day

I think it is not a good idea to have a pet monkey as a kid.  I think that because monkeys are wild they hurt people a bunch too.  Here are some good things that you will like.  I think that monkeys are not as good but they're good a bit. Here are the bad things that monkeys do, they hurt people, they are wild and they are not under control. I think that people can not safely adopt monkeys.  Because it is bad to have a pet monkey and they sometimes will not like you.  That is what I think.

Mason: Blog Of The Day

I think that people shouldn't buy monkeys to be children. It's also weird. It makes them happy because they can have a kid that never grows old and moves out of the house. The bad thing is that come from having a monkey as a child is that it is a wild animal taken away from it's own home and it will bite you and scratch you. It's not their natural habitat and they are confused. I don't think that people can safely adopt monkeys because it is a bad idea.

Daddio: Blog of the Day 7/30/10

For today's blog of the day, I want you to read this news article from ABC news about older people whose kids have grown up, and they decide to adopt monkeys and treat them like members of the family.  Make sure you read page two (link) and three (link) of the article.
Now that you've read the article, I want you post up on whether you think it's a good idea or not for people to adopt these monkeys.  What are the good things that come of it?  What are some of the bad things?  Finally, I want to you write about whether or not people can safely adopt monkeys and explain why you think that.

Mommio: Cooking With Kids

Yesterday we cooked a meal to go along with our World Geography Unit.  Right now we are still studying North America and this week the focus is on Canada.  We will be using this cookbook for all of our Geography cooking:
We like this book because it is organized by region and the include a little food history and interesting facts for each section. For last night's meal the kids cooked Maple Chicken, Wild Rice and Blueberry Crisp.
Maple Chicken
Wild Rice
Blueberry Crisp
Our Canadian meal was a huge success-  There were several who "LOVED" the chicken, several who "LOVED" the rice and almost everyone loved the blueberry crisp, except for Kiki who didn't like "that blue stuff". Next time we do geography cooking it will be for the USA, and the menu involves fried chicken, corn on the cob and brownies...I'm pretty sure that one will go over well with all the toes!

Avery: Blog Of The Day

His new life was not so cool. He did not enjoy it at all. Only if he had pants on. Oh... I can't remember if Dad asked me about this... but... I think he escaped because every day every thing was the same. It was getting boring and it is what all the monkeys do too. Throwing (stinky, gross and sticky) poo is just not the funnest thing in the world.  At the end of the poem the monkey was both happy and sad. He was sad because he couldn't be outside of the zoo. He was happy because people took care of him and fed him.

Connor: Blog Of The Day

Well the monkey goes away from the zoo only to go back because the outside world is to complicated for him.  The monkey wished to enjoy the same freedom as humans, but couldn't enjoy much of it for he was unable to get a job that pays cash.  I think the monkey is sad at the end of the poem because he ends up exactly were he started.  I think the message the author is trying to get across to the readers is try new things and if that doesn't work out stick to what you're best at.

Gabe: Blog Of The Day

He think he left the zoo because he didn't like the habitat he was in.  I think he didn't like that he was in a cage and he didn't have a lot of space to move around.  He thought he would have a better life if he left because he would be free.  He figured out that when he left he had no food and nothing to do so he figured out that it was worse out of the zoo.  He was happy at the end because he could go back to the zoo, because he didn't like the life and of the zoo and now he has people to see him and other monkeys to play with and he has food.  I think the author is saying that some people can't always get what they want and they should go back to what they were doing.

Kiki's Blog of the Day

Once upon a time, there was a toad who had a hat.  He also had a bow tie.  He found a boat on the island where he lived.  The boat didn't go in water because it could fly.  When the toad flew up to a big giant rainbow, he sat on the rainbow that was right next to the sun. Then he figured out that it wasn't a rainbow.  It was a planet.  He went back down to his island because it was getting too hot for him next to the sun.  So he went down under the trees so he could cool off where he found a giant cup of milk.  He jumped into the cup of milk and then he was all cooled off.  The End.

Marney: Blog Of The Day

I think the monkey left the zoo because he did not like it there.  He wanted to do new things.  His life was not better when he left the zoo because he did not get food and did not have money.  I think he was sad because he never had people to play with and did not get food.  The author is trying to tell me that the monkey had a happy sad life because he was happy sometimes and sad sometimes.  It was called Monkey In The Middle because he was in the middle of the zoo and the outside and he couldn't decide which one he wanted to stay at.

Mason: Blog Of The Day

I think that the monkey left the zoo because he was bored of doing the same thing over and over again.   It didn't turn out to be a better life than it was.   The monkey ended up going back to the zoo and doing the same thing over again.  I think that he was happy at the end because he could get food.

Daddio: Blog of the Day 7/28/10

For today's blog of the day, I want you to read the following poem that Marney found, called "Monkey in the Middle" by Sawyer Sewell.  Read it and then read the questions after the poem to figure out what you need to blog about.

Monkey In the Middle: by Sawyer Sewell

There once was a monkey in a city’s zoo,
who dreamed of the outside sun.
He did like hitting kids with poo,
but he felt that that’s been done.

So he climbed out in the middle of night,
and explored through the cities streets.
He stopped when it was turning light
And felt he wanted to eat.

That poor monkey needed cash
to afford his exotic meals.
But his stomach led him to the trash,
where he ate a cube of butter and apple peels.

If he wanted to eat, he needed a job,
to pay for the food on his tummy.
So he asked many snobs,
but each time he left without money.

He tried to be an actor,
but found out he couldn't sing or cry.
He had the smarts to be a politician,
but found out he couldn't lie.

None one wanted his application.
No one gave him a chance.
Some were scared because he was from another nation.
Other because he didn’t own pants.

He only found one job,
that paid food and shelter instead of wages.
All he was asked to do,
was to sit inside steel cages,
and dream of the outside sun.

For today's blog, I want you to write about what the poem meant to you and what message you thought the author was trying to make in this poem.  Ask yourself these questions first: The monkey leaves the zoo for a better life, but how did it turn our for him?  Why did he want to leave the zoo in the first place?  Was the monkey happy or sad at the end of the poem?

The Mystery of The Glasses
By Gabe
One day Harry Potter woke up and his glasses were missing.  Then he called a detective, it was a monkey! The monkey said " What did you lose?"  "My glasses!" The monkey said "I will go look for them". Then the monkey  went to his house and sat. Harry Potter went to the monkey's house and saw the monkey wearing the glasses. The monkey got arrested

The Mystery
By Marney
One day a monkey was going to the zoo and the people kicked him out.  So he was going back home so he can get some sleep.  Then he got an idea in his mind.  He wanted to be a detective and so he did.  He went outside and he went to the library and he said someone stool a book with out paying.  So he was going to find the book and the people that did it.  Then he went home and he did not have the book so he went to bed.  The next day he went outside and he said I am going to find him, and so that day he went to the library and he had the book and the people  but it was not over.  He called the police and said I found them and then the police came.  He said they live on Pecan Drive and their number is 512-636-8790. They are saying that they needed  books and I saw their house, it was filled with books.  So then the people got to jail and the book was safe.  Then the monkey lived happily ever after.

The Monkey Murder
By Connor

It was a terrible night. A young female monkey was asleep in her cage, little did the zoo keepers know she would never wake up.  The following morning the zoo keepers found the young monkey with a cut on her neck so severe that her head was no longer connected to her body.  That was when the zoo keepers called a detective to solve the case, but the detective couldn't solve the case and therefore it was left up to the members of the animal kingdom.  Finally the animals decided that a human was the culprit, but to them every human was the same.  The detective tried again to solve the case, this time asking who else was at the crime scene last night.  The zoo keepers told the detective that the only other person to have touched the deceased monkey last night was the vet. "You see that monkey was sick, but the illness was just a common cold."    The following night the adult animals stayed awake while the young ones slept.  Suddenly the youngest adult monkey named James, whom was wearing a pair of glasses, saw a sword swinging toward him. He also saw a black helmet that looked like it was used in the middle ages.  James dodged swiftly and the next day told the other animals what he had seen.  The zoo keepers checked the footage from the cameras hidden all around the zoo.  On the footage taken two nights ago they saw a man in steal armor slicing the monkey's head off.  The following night the lions were the animals on watch, but they were looking at their own cubs rather than at the monkeys' young.  Soon another monkey was in peril, the strange knight had hung the monkey.  The next morning the detective looked at the corpse of the second monkey and the corpse of the first monkey.  He noticed that both were killed like people in the middle ages.  Next the zoo keepers came in holding a sword and shield, one zoo keeper put down the sword the other put the shield down.  The detective questioned all four of the zoo keepers that were working last night and one says that he was practicing a magic spell that was supposed to bring people from different time periods to the present.  The zoo keeper explained that he was using it to bring a wizard back from the middle ages because he couldn't get the spell right.  The detective asked if he was performing this spell the night the first monkey died.  The zoo keeper told the detective yes and promised to not use the spell again.  Then the detective asked to see this book of spells and when he saw the book he recited the spell in reverse at twelve o'clock and the knight disappeared.
The End or is it?

Mommio: Ready For School!

Today it's raining and we had to skip our Monday at Sea World so we have been having a nice, lazy at home day today.  Which gave me lots of time to print the new Letter Of The Week  program that Nana is going to start with Max and Jack.  We found this curriculum on a homeschool blog with lots of other great printable stuff.  The boys have been watching me print the lessons and they are so excited about their new "school" supplies that they practiced with it today with the new magnets that Nana got and their letter A cards.

Mommio: Double Digits=Double Piercing

Last night Daddio and I took Avery out for her special alone night out celebrating her 10th birthday.  We ate good food, spent time at the book store, watched the new Twilight movie and Avery got a second piercing in her left ear.  She was so happy with how it turned out!

Mommio: First Love

Someone in our house has a huge crush...and it's not the obvious 14 yr old boy or the giggly 10 yr old vampire fanatic.  Nope, it's the curly-headed, trouble-making three year old.  Max is in LOVE with Diego.
It is so sweet watching his eyes light up as he talks on, and on, and on, and on about Diego to anyone who will listen.  Diego has suddenly become his best friend- he takes him everywhere (he is invisible to us), he sleeps with him at night, he makes him wear socks only, "no shoes in bed", he goes on a boat with Diego and they don't even have to wear life jackets and I have heard that Max taught Diego to be a big boy and poop on the potty.  It's all very cute, so when Max told us we need to have a birthday party for Diego of course his indulgent mom and Nana jumped right in and said YES!  Marney helped Max and Jack decorate for the party with some giant Diego coloring sheets that Nana found.
Nana helped Kiki and the little boys to bake and decorate and brownie birthday cake for Diego.
And Friday afternoon we sang happy birthday to Diego, celebrated and ate cake.
One interesting side note- when it was time to sing Happy Birthday to Diego, Max got really mad at me and said we were supposed to be singing to HIM, not to Diego.  Hmmm.  Now I am wondering if the entire first love thing was a big plan he had so that we would throw Max a birthday party!

Connor: Doom Chapter 2

Hector came toward me thrusting his sword in the air menacingly.  "You kill me but now me kill you.", Hector said, his mouth forming a hideous evil grin.  As soon as he tried to strike another hit I jumped away.  Eventually the raft stopped moving. Suddenly, as I was about to step ashore I looked at the river "I remember this place I have been here before" I said thinking aloud. Then the short man replied "Yeah, Yeah I know it appeared in one of your dreams. I've heard it all before, man."  I wanted to call him an idiot, but I couldn't find the nerves to do so.  "Sir you don't understand. I mean I really was here before, like when I was young." The reply came, "Now that you mention it, I do remember a water nymph by the name of Thetis dipping her son in the river and I asked her son's name. Her reply was 'Achilles.'  That is all I remember, end of story."  I suddenly remembered my name, "I am Achilles. Greek war hero. I killed Hector."  Suddenly I felt the eyes of the dead looking at me, like you're the Achilles.  I grabbed the arrow from my ankle, it hurt and I nearly fainted.  Suddenly the short guy ran over and bandaged my ankle.  "My weak spot, did my mother dip me into the Styx by the ankle?" I asked as I stood up clutching the arrow in my hand. Suddenly, the short guy said "Yes Achilles, you are right."  I got up and walked toward the big castle in the distance. On my trip through the underworld I didn't see anything in my life as far away as that castle.  I had a feeling that I had gained a few friends by saying my name and yet I have also gained more enemies than just Hector. No doubt they were most likely Trojans rather than Greeks.  I didn't quite think I would ever make it out of the underworld known as Hades.  I was sure I was one hundred percent doomed and this place was getting creepier by the moment.

Mason: First Animation Movies

Nana got this animation book for me and I made my first movie with Mommio called The Epic Crawl Of The Red Blob.  I am using a program called SAM to make my movies.  I hope you all like it.
We made another movie called the Magic Lego Tower.  It is when a tower of legos builds itself.

Mommio: Art Class

It's been a long time since we had a regular art class, but we are moving on to a new section of the book and yesterday we started learning about Leonardo DaVinci.  We learned about DaVinci as a child and all about how he was very good at making and recording observations about things around him.  The project today was to take something apart and observe it by sketching and note taking.  It came from an extra book I have been using:
After discussing DaVinci's childhood we looked at some of the sketches he made observing both nature and mechanical things.  We talked about how he had to take things apart to look at each small piece and make new observations at each step.  Here are the sketches that we studied:
Then we learned how to take notes like DaVinci from this website. The basic steps we discussed were:
1- Write how you want, not how you're taught (spelling, style, etc. are not important- Da Vinci even wrote backwords)
2- Creativity doesn't come from structure (you don't have to "organize" your notes)
3- Visualize your concepts (sketch EVERYTHING)
4- Start simple and expand (look at the whole thing before taking apart)
5- Don't stop until you have covered the paper (there are always more things to say or sketch)
6- Manage space for later (if you think of something off-topic while taking notes give that idea a special space on your paper to expand later)
After the kids all understood these ideas we moved on to doing a group observation and note taking session using an orange as our subject.  They learned to look at the orange as if they had never see one before and, using all their senses, fill the paper (or whiteboard in this case) with everything that came to mind about the subject.  They really did great with this and were ready to move on to their own ideas.
Elder had fun taking apart an old computer we had laying around and did a series of sketches as he took each piece out.
Kennedy chose a large cardboard block to take apart and observe.  Great work Kiki!
Marney picked an avocado.  She really enjoyed cutting it apart, she has been wanting to get to this lesson for a few weeks now and has decided that she wants to to an entire series of these.
Lily brought a party blower to check out.  It was a really great item to observe, even down to the tiny wire that the curling paper wraps around.
Gabe chose a broken book light.  He found lots of small pieces inside to sketch.
Avery took apart a small flashlight and took a long time with each piece making sure she got all the details right.
Connor and Mason missed class today but when they do the assignment we'll post theirs up too.  For homework the kids will each do another note taking session using any subject they choose.  Next week- we will look at some of DaVinci's inventions and sketch our own inventions.

The Mayans  had their own government.  They have a game called Pok-a-Tok. How you play Pok-a-Tok is you wear leather armor and you hit a ball into a concrete hoop.We care about them  because they invented basketball and calendars.

Connor: Blog Of The Day

The Ancient Mayan way of life gave modern time multiple things.  The Mayans were the some of the first people to play professional sports which is kind of interesting because it was kind of like modern basketball and soccer combined and reminded the Mayans of their past.  The Mayans created the first calender which was surprisingly correct because it had three hundred sixty days and told them when was best to plant, harvest, and raise livestock.  That Mayan calender was a base for the modern one, for all we would have to do to modify the Mayan calender is add five more days.  The Mayans were very advanced for their time period even though their religion was much like that of the Greeks in that they thought that there was an underworld as well as this world.  The Mayans were known for writing in both symbols as the Egyptians did and an alphabet system again like the Greeks.  The Mayans are the reason we call the month before June, May.  The Mayans were awesome because of how many things that we learned from just their writings alone.  I have a feeling that the end of this ancient group of people may have been caused by a drought or famine rather than what historians think.

Avery: Blog Of The Day

The Mayans lived in Central America and they built pyramids. They built pyramids because they were the biggest buildings they could have. They used them as royal tombs and as some temples. They also played a cool sport called Pok- a- tok. They played it because it reminded them about the wars they went to. To play Pok- a- tok they wore protective pads on their arms, legs and chest. Also they used a ball the size of a basketball. The game was like basketball. Their goal was to just throw the ball into a stone hoop while the other team members try to stop him. They also have a leader who is sometimes also a priest. He dresses up in this cool red and yellow costume. He has to paint his skin yellow and red too.
The Mayans are also very good at lots of stuff. They are very smart. They are awesome scientists, they are good at working with medicine and astronomy. The Mayans are important to us today because they invented a lot of things that we use and do today. They invented calenders, writing and basketball. They might have invented even more than all of that.
