November is NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and in honor of Daddio spending time writing us a really amazing novel the kids are each going to write one for him. NaNoWriMo is for adults as well as kids, and there is a great website for the kids and teachers to use in preparing for the month. So, for the next few months we are taking a short break from our World Geography Unit Study to work on this one. During October the kids will be formulating their novel writing plans using the Young Writers Program curriculum. We already started and the kids are having fun answering questions about their characters and plot lines. Here is a sample of questions that Kiki answered this week with Nana about her main character, Sally.
Starting on November 1st the kids will begin their novels. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to write a novel from scratch with a certain number of words between November 1st and November 30th. The word count is based on age/grade level and is generally set at a minimum of 50,000 words for adults- but our shortest one will be Kiki's- her goal is 300-500 words. Editing is not important, and is actually discouraged (until December). The very first assignment was to get rid of their "inner editor" for the next two months. We can't wait to share what they come up with, they already have some really cool characters and are starting to work on exciting plot lines!
