Last Sunday I weat to the Mayborn Museum. My favorite exhibit was the news room. What I saw was a simulation of a tornado. And I saw a green screen. And I saw cameras. I saw a globe that showed our atmosphere.
It is important because it teaches us about the weather. And it teaches us about our atmosphere. It teaches us to use news equipment. It shows us how the green screen works.
I think it is a great because you can make up the weather. And it shows us our atmosphere. And it shows us how the green screen works. It is a great museum.

The exhibit I liked the most was the curiosity cabinet room because it has a whole bunch of drawers with different things in each one. One of the drawers had a steel sword and three stone knives. In a cabinet there was a cool turtle skeleton and you can tell it was a turtle skeleton. One of the drawers had a cool steel curved sword.
No one really knows the history of the exhibit because they don't label things. They don't label things because they want you to be curious of what it is. As an example there is a tall skeleton in a big glass case but nobody knows what it is. Just like the curved steel sword, no one knows what it is. No one knows what is actually in the exhibit.
I learned a lot of things in the curiosity cabinets. I didn't know that a whale skull was that big. I didn't know that people spent that much time carving rocks just for knives. I really liked the curosity cabinets.

In the museum I saw an actual mummy in the Ancient Egypt exhibit. In the Ancient Egypt exhibit there was also a pair of stone blocks, one on a sled the other on the ground. There was also magnetic puzzle in the shape of a jar. There was actual Egyptian pottery on display. The ones in the back of the display case dated back around five thousand years ago. The pottery in the front of the display case was three thousand years old. There was a bust of what archeologists thought the mummy on display looked like when it was alive.
The exhibit teaches people about Ancient Egypt. The actual artifacts, including the mummy, were authentic. The exhibit is important in that it is meant to teach people about the culture of Ancient Egypt. Some of the artifacts have existed for thousands of years without breaking. The exhibit also features a copy of the famous Rosetta Stone, which can translate Hieroglyphics into the Egyptian language and then into Greek. The exhibit shows the art/writing of the Ancient Egyptians, the funeral hieroglyphs found on the walls of a Pharaoh's tomb.
Being able to see an actual mummy interested me. I enjoyed looking at the artifacts and was surprised by how old they were. The copy of the Rosetta Stone was extremely interesting, despite being just a copy. I loved the copy of the hieroglyphs because they represented the mythology and customs of Ancient Egypt. Just seeing the historic artifacts and exact replicas was amazing.

This exhibit is called bubble room. If you walk in to that room you would see a huge table that has fake ducks and that has rows. Then you would see a stand that you stand on and then pull the rope. Then you would see lines of people every place that you walk. Then you would see another place were you stand and pull a rope. When you pull the first rope I talked about you would make a bubble go over your body then you would let go. The other one I talked about is ware you pull the string and you make a bubble. Then you blow and make the bubble go away.
Well this will be easy, the history about is bubbles. The part of history is you having fun. They want you to have fun because it is supposed to be a kids museum. But they also want you to play with bubbles. People need to have fun at the museum.
I loved the bubble room. Why I posted about it was because it is my favorite thing to do. I loved it. All the things had a long line but it was still fun. I got to do the table and I got to do the blowing bubble thing. I also got to do the one where you are covered with a big bubble.

My favorite exhibit was the weather room. There were lots of things in it. There was a green screen, a miniature tornado, a little globe, a camera, three TVs and a little desk. The camera was pointed at the green screen and attached to three TVs. There was a small TV behind the camera, so that the people in front of the green screen could see what they were doing. Then there were two more next to the green screen so that other people could watch what they were doing. The little desk was so you could pretend to be a news reporter. The camera couldn't point to the desk, but it was still fun. The tornado was really cool, it was basically a ton of hot air blowing and then at the bottom it would be blowing cold and spinning around.
The main reason the weather room was there, was so that they can show you how news reporters, tornadoes and storms work. The green screen showed high winds and storms in parts of the U.S. It was also showing you how the equipment works and how to use some of it. The camera was in a glass case, so you couldn't do much with. You could turn the handle and make it go left and right. The tornado machine was showing everyone how tornadoes are made. Hot air and cold air are against each other, making high winds. The desk didn't really do anything, it's just for playing around with. The globe wasn't an every day globe. It had this blue and white goo in it. You had to spin it around. I can't remember what it was for, but I think it had something to do with winds and water.
My favorite thing in the exhibit was the green screen because I could predict the weather and show what was going to happen. Dad and I messed around with the green screen, while Marney and Kiki were working with the small camera. My second favorite was the globe because it was interesting watching the goo and stuff spin around in the globe. I loved seeing it all go together and the stop when you finished spinning. The weather exhibit was my favorite one in the whole museum, because it was kind of technical and fun.

My favorite exhibit at the Mayborn Museum was the one about Egypt. There was a mummy of a girl named Annie. There was also a thing where you make pots out of magnets. They also had a thing where you pulled blocks to see which one was heavier.
The Egypt exhibit is important because it taught me about mummies. There is stuff from a long time ago, like pots. People can learn that the pots are very, very old. They found the pots in Egypt.
I thought it was awesome because it taught me about mummies and very, very old pots. I learned that the people who found the mummy made a statue of the mummy's face. They scanned the mummy with a x-ray to see what it looked like. It was fun to go to the Egyptian exhibit.

Last Sunday we went to the Mayborn Museum in Waco. For today's blog post, I want you to write a report of one of the exhibits that we saw while at the museum. Your report must be three paragraphs long and must also include a picture of the exhibit or something related to the exhibit. In the first paragraph, I want you to describe what exhibit you are writing about and explain exactly what you saw (i.e., what things were actually in the exhibit). The second paragraph needs to have background and detail about the exhibit-- what's the history of it, why it was important, etc. The third paragraph needs to describe what you thought about the exhibit-- and don't just say it "was cool"-- I'm looking for you to actually give information that you didn't know before, but you learned from the exhibit.

Mommio: Art Class- Impressionists- Renoir
This week's lesson on Impressionist artists focused on Pierre Auguste Renoir.
Renoir was a French painter who was very much in demand during the late 1800's for his portrait paintings. Many Impressionist artists had a hard time gaining recognition for their artwork, but Renoir overcame this problem with a charming personality. He gained a reputation as having a friendly nature and wealthy people asked him to paint their portraits. They were also drawn to his style of painting- the layering of quick and varied brush strokes to create soft lines and texture. We looked more closely at three of his works and discussed the types of brush strokes and the use of layering colors that we saw in each painting. First we looked at his self-portrait painted in 1875 (above). Next we looked at Girls at the Piano (1892) and Head of a Dog (1870).
We also watched a short youtube video gallery of Renoir's art and discussed which paintings the kids liked and why. Thanks to Daddio we were able to watch it on the giant TV.
Here's the Renoir virtual gallery- they seemed to like ALL of them. They think Impressionism is pretty cool.

The assignment for today involved using our gouache paints and several different paint brushes to try out new brush strokes. We watched this tutorial on some basic strokes first.
Then the kids tried it out themselves.
This was a very frustrating lesson for most of the kids- they are not used to me telling them how to paint and a few of them had problems feeling like they couldn't get it "perfect"- but afterward they realized they had done really well. Here are some "S" strokes they made today using a flat brush and a round brush.
Next they worked on making "comma" strokes with a round brush and thin lines with a liner brush.
Finally, they practiced layering lighter colors of paint over darker colors with short brush strokes by painting a portrait of Franki. They created an impression of a dog by doing a quick outline sketch.

Then they filled the shape in with paint, making sure it was opaque.
After it dried they added short strokes of grey and white to create fur. Here's our Franki!
Avery REALLY loves this lesson and made several more paintings to practice her
brush strokes and layering.
She even took some time to teach Kiki all about the lesson that she missed.
Avery is officially the artist of the day!

The Journey of the Comedians
By Connor
The two comedians walked up toward the stage. One of the comedians acted like a ventriloquist while the other acted like a puppet. The routine ended with the comedian acting like a puppet saying "I'm not trying to be funny." Then he pulled a nose-like prop in front of his real nose. After the performance the comedians signed autographs and headed toward their homes. The one who played a ventriloquist said to the short comedian, "James, I kind of want to try a new routine next time. I am sick of playing the ventriloquist."
James responded "How do you think I feel about acting like a puppet? Besides, it was your idea to do that routine in the first place."
The taller of the two, George, said he was sorry he ever came up with the idea and entered his house.
The next day the comedians had to entertain the math teacher at a local school. James said "Hey, George."
George replied "Yes, James?"
James then said, "Would you care for a slice of Pi?"
The math teacher simply said "Pi is an irrational number and as such can't be split evenly. Pie is pronounced the same way, but is spelled differently."
James and George looked at each other, dumbfounded by the fact that this teacher had no sense of humor. James replied "It would appear that you don't like our jokes. Maybe George and I could attempt to make you laugh."
The math teacher said "Alright, if you can make me laugh you'll each get five dollars added to your payment for today. You have five hours to make me laugh, if you can't you don't get the extra cash."
Oliver, the math teacher, along with George and James wandered around the town. At one point in this walk George pulled a feather out of his pocket and tried to tickle Oliver. Oliver said "That will not work. I am not ticklish at all." Jake also attempted to make Oliver laugh by hitting George's toe with a bat. Oliver said "I am not a child and as such mindless cartoon-like violence does not appeal to me. Although I must question your IQ level based on the fact that you just imitated a cartoon."
James grinned and said "I am very smart FYI. As for George, he is also intelligent." The three kept on walking and upon each stop they would try to make Oliver laugh.
When the walk stopped it was nearing noon. James had slipped some pepper into George's lunch and when he ate it he sneezed. Oliver was not impressed. He said "I have seen six year-old children do that to each other. You will have to be more creative than that, I assure you." James grabbed some paint and drew a tunnel on what seemed to be a wall. He ran into it head first and ran across the street. George tried to follow Jake, but upon hitting the paint he hit the wall. Oliver looked over and said "Old style trick. Make something that looks like a wall and paint a tunnel on it. Chances are you'll take the right "Painting" and the fellow chasing you won't."
James and George looked at each other and James said "This isn't going to be a piece of cake is it?"
George responded "Sorry, it is more like potato salad. Oh wait, we were talking about making him laugh right?"
James said "Yes, we were and still are so forget the potato salad joke."
George said "Yeah. I agree it will be tough, but we need that extra five bucks."
Oliver said "Nice try with the potato salad joke, but try again."
James walked over and said "Oliver would you please show us how you laugh?"
Oliver replied "No. I can't without you to making me laugh." After a while of trying to trick Oliver into laughing James stopped.
"Okay man have it your way." James turned to George and said "Hey, George?"
George said "Yes, James," in an exasperated tone.
"How would you like some punch?"
George said "I would love some."
James punched George in the face. "There, Oliver hope you got the punch line." George stood up and looked over at Oliver. Oliver was laughing so hard he couldn't stop. James said "Oh good we finally can have the cash!"
Oliver stood up and said "No you can't. You must wait for nightfall."
James said "That ain't fair. If we wait for nightfall we will not get the money."
Oliver said "Fine you got me. I can't stand losing the bet." Oliver then reluctantly handed over fifteen bucks.
Jamee said "Finally we have enough money for new props and costumes. We don't have to do the ventriloquist joke we always use!"

ALIEN MEN
By Gabe
One day there was a 38 year-old man named Johnny who was watching TV. He was startled when he heard a giant crash from his backyard. He went outside and he saw something crazy. It was a small alien ship and he was very, very surprised. He walked up to the ship and looked around. It looked empty but then something popped up and it was two people. One guy was short and one guy was normal sized. He figured out that they were aliens from a planet in outer space where everyone is normal sized and looks human. The reason one guy was really, really short was because Jack and James got kicked off the giant's planet by one of the giants. They were kicked off because they wanted carrot seeds for their planet. When they fell to earth Jack got smashed and became tiny.
Then Johnny started helping them fix their ship so they could fly to the giant's planet, fight them, then go home. He figured out they needed lava to run the motor, so Jack went and got some. James started fixing the ship and Johnny went to go make guns and knifes and rope for tying the giants up to their giant trees. Then Jack got back with the lava and they put the lava in the motor and it worked. Then they left to go to the giant's planet and fight them.
When they were in the ship Johnny, Jack and James got all of their guns, flaming machetes and rope ready to use when they got there. When they got out of the ship Johnny went straight to the first giant and tripped it, then he stabbed a flaming machete into his spine about seven times and killed it. Jack pulled out his gun and shot one fifty times and killed it. James stabbed one fifty times in the face and then pulled his head off with rope and killed it.
The fight stopped because the giants quit because they were getting beat up by Johnny and the aliens. The giants wanted to make a deal that they could have one giant and no more fighting. They decided to take the deal so they tied up a giant and put it in the ship. Then they left to go home and told the giant that they had tied in the ship to be nice.
They got back to their home planet with the giant and told him to start working. Johnny was about to go home and everyone told him good bye. He got in the old rusty black pod and waved good bye. He went home and started watching TV again. He decided that it is much more fun to go help aliens get back to their planet than to sit at home watching TV.

Mason Goes To Pluto
By Mason
By Mason
One day Mason the astronaut was getting ready for his mission to Pluto. The reason he was going to Pluto was because he wanted to see if there was any life on it. Mason was getting his equipment ready for the trip. He got his helmet and his space suit and oxygen tank. He got pudding and he got some water. Then he mapped out his trip to Pluto. Then he said good bye to his family.
Now Mason was in his ship in outer space. It was very long and it was very lonely. He passed through the milky way and he saw the big dipper and little dipper. He passed all the planets. Mason finally saw Pluto and landed on it.
Mason saw that everything was purple on Pluto. He saw aliens that looked like humans. But there was one big difference. The grown ups were little, and the kids were big.
Mason met two aliens and they said that their names were Max and William. They talked nice to him and showed him around the town. Mason asked them why the kids were big and the grown ups were small. They explained that they go through reverse aging.
Before Mason went back home he took pictures. When Mason was back on earth he told everyone what he discovered. He showed them all the pictures he took of the aliens. Mason become famous.

Mini Man
By Ava
One day a 7 year old boy named Jake went to the park with his mom. His mom's name was Jo. Jo found someone for Jake to talk to. Jake went to talk to this little girl. Her name was Carla. Carla was 5 years old and had a job. She tested science experiments. Jake went with her to a lab because they had to test something on her. They put her in this big machine and pulled a lever. There were flashing lights everywhere.
Jake was scared and ran to the back of the room. Carla walked out of the machine and looked at everyone's frightened faces. She ran to a mirror and screamed. Her head looked like her dad's. She freaked out and ran around the room. She calmed down after 10 minutes of screaming and decided that she couldn't go home looking like that. She decided to sleep at Jake's house until the whole thing was taken care of.
She tried to get rid of her beard and mustache by using scissors. Then she took off the glasses and used contact lenses. She put on one of Jo's awesome wigs that she makes. The wig she chose looked a lot like her real hair. Jo walked into the room. She screamed and pulled Jake out of the room. Jake explained everything to Jo. She calmed down and tried helping them. Carla looked a lot like herself again.
She felt much better. She spent all night thinking of something that could make her look like herself. Finally, Carla thought of a reverse potion that could change her back to normal. She drew it on a big white board and explained it to Jo and Jake. They understood what they had to do. The next morning Jo ran to the store and grabbed all the things they needed. They ran to the lab and put the potion together.
They put the potion in a metal box and attached it to the machine. Carla stepped inside and told Jake what to do. He pressed the red buttons on the bottom and pushed the lever up. It was the opposite of what the other people did to her. She stepped out and ran to the mirror and looked at her normal self. She was happy to see she was her old self again.

One day there were a family of three people. There was the dad, the kid and the other kid. The kids names were Jack and Jake. The dad's name was Grey. They all woke up one morning and they were super tired. But they still had to go to a picture place. So they got breakfast and got in the car. Then they got to the picture place.
Then they were all excited so they went inside. The dad picked up the camera and the boys got up there on the stage. The boys got in a funny pose and the dad took a picture. Then the dad got his picture taken by the boys. But that picture did not turn out so good. Then that was when the dad did not want a picture.
They went home and they took naps, but Jack did not. He put a fake mustache on and had to stay in the bathroom. Then the dad woke up. Then Jake woke up. Then they all went back to the picture place because they wanted another picture.
So then they were at the picture place. Then Grey sat down to watch TV. Then he changed the channel and then My Name Is Earl came on TV. Then Grey said to Jack, "You have an Earl mustache." Then they took a picture.
Then they went home and they had fun. Then Jack said that it was a fake mustache. Then everyone laughed. Then Jack said, "No, for real." Then Grey and Jake said, "Okay." Then they all had so much fun.

Roller Coaster Mix-Up
By Kiki
One rainy morning at a house in Colorado two boys and their dad were getting ready to go to Pig Park. One of the boys was named Turtle and he was eight years old. The other kid is named Watermelon and he is two. Then it was sunny so they want to Pig Park. They got to the park and parked in the parking lot. They went into Pig Park. They bought their tickets. Turtle and Watermelon were happy because they were at the park.
They went on a ride called The Rabbit. It was fun and very, very fast. They went to go see a show called Let's Party! They went on a ride called Merry Go Round. They went super, super fast.
Turtle and Watermelon wanted to go on a roller coaster. They went on one called Paintball Fight. It was very, very, very fun. When they got off of the roller coaster they looked funny. Watermelon had a mustache and messed up hair and his clothes were all different. Watermelon got glued to Turtle on the ride. Now they are glued to each other and they can't do anything.
They went home and went to bed. They woke up the next day and looked exactly the same as when they got off the roller coaster. They were happy that they looked funny.

Connor: Blog Of The Day
Dear Mommio, August 3, 2011
I think you are doing a wonderful job teaching us. Our unit this month and last month has been an interesting one. I can't wait for the Civil War unit we will be starting next week or so. The Red Badge of Courage is a great book in my opinion. I also love the history book I have been reading. Science or rather physics is a good subject as well. I respect the amount of effort you put in to teaching us and as such would like to thank you.
I think that I am doing better in math than I have in the past. It might be because of the squares and square roots or because it provides more of a challenge. I know I'm doing good with history and I can't wait to read world history. I also know I've been having trouble with the blog posts I have written lately. I am not doing to well with D. E. A. R reading and I am sorry about that. I think I should improve on a few things. I should improve upon my blog posts. I should have capitals in the right place and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. I should edit more and not complain about it. I shouldn't complain about having to do math or correct math either. As for the Red Badge of Courage, I should read more even if it is a bit difficult and I am extremely sorry about not reading more than I have been. I should also work harder on my resolution to spend more time with the kids. I am sorry that I am not a great student and as such I shall strive to improve.
I have a few ideas about what could be changed. I would like to have a more complex book for physics than what the kids are reading. I want to do more science stuff with Daddio, mainly chemistry. I would like to do SAT stuff in my room so I don't have to deal with a high noise level while answering those questions. I would also like it if we read at the food table at night instead of saying we will and never getting to it.
Love,
Connor

Mom,
I think you are a wonderful home school teacher! You help us when we need help and you make sure we understand why we were confused, or got it wrong. You take perfect time in the morning to work with everyone. This week you start with Max at 8:00, then work with Kiki, then Mason, Marney and Gabe, then me.You also have a nice working schedule. Sure, kids will need help understanding a problem in the middle of you working with everyone else, but you still go and help them with whatever they need. Your an awesome teacher, Mom.
I think I'm great student when it comes to alone work. I can do almost all my work by myself. Every once and a while I get something wrong on math and ask for help, and I ask how to spell some words. Other than that stuff I need to check my work with you and stuff like that. I could say that I don't complain at all and I never get frustrated at people when they tell me I did or said something wrong. But this week is kinda hard not to get frustrated with the little boys yelling in the living room, where I'm working. I think everyone is a little annoyed with all the yelling. I get most of my work correct though. On grammar and math, I get some stuff wrong, but that's okay, your there to help.
I think that the way we do school is great. I think that everyone is happy with the amount of work they have. I want to have more questions for geography, because I love it so much. I know that six questions is a lot, but I'd like to try for eight instead. I think that blog of the day is going very well. I think that Dad should have one day where we have to edit sentences. He should tell us the rules, then write a messed up, little paragraph for us to edit. It would also be fun if we got grades on our work. Like real grades though, A+, A-, B, C, D, F. That kind of stuff would be really cool. I just want to know how good I'm doing on my work.

Mommio: Blog Of The Day
Dear Kids,
Thank you all for the nice things you said about me as your teacher. I was happy to hear that you all think I am a good teacher, even though you really have no one to compare me to! I think that I am a great teacher too. When we started homeschooling I was not sure how I would do as your teacher, but after doing it for many years I never worry about that anymore. I feel like I am a patient teacher and that I manage to give each of you the individual time you need to learn new things. I can see how well I am doing by watching each one of you learn more every day.
You are all excellent students and I'm proud of all of you! Connor- I think your improvement in math lately is excellent and I also appreciate that you have learned the value of getting your work done on time. Mason- I have watched you become an awesome reader this year and feel like we have accomplished so much together through all of your hard work. Avery- your independence is amazing. You have been such a breeze to teach and I think that you have learned to also respect my opinion as a teacher and take my suggestions. Gabe- I know that you like to work with me, but I am also happy to say that you have now learned to work on your own too. You've learned to be patient with me and wait, which has been really important in our busy house. Marney- you are suck a quick learner that I might have to start thinking a little "outside the box" because pretty soon you'll know more than I do on every subject. That's what being such a great reader does for you! Kiki- when we do school together you are so grown-up. I love watching you learn and seeing the way your eyes light up when you know that you have just learned something new. It was great having Nana teach you early on but I am so glad you are ready to work with me now. Max- you little smarty pants, you are really speeding up in school. Just this week we got rid of ABC cards, ABC writing and your song- wow! And Jack- I think you know more than all of us combined already and I can't wait to start school with you.
Although I think school is going well lately, I am always looking for ways to improve what we're doing and I really liked the suggestions you had. I think we need to come up with a more solid schedule, one that we stick to. I would love to get to our unit study on a more regular basis, it seems to be the thing that we drop because we get busy in the afternoons. I also want to add in more of the things you guys love (and I love to teach): art, science, cooking and music. I think we need to work harder on our writing, some of you should be writing research papers and reports. Last, I would really love to find a way for Dad to be more involved in your schooling. We run out of time for that and I think we should all find a way to make it a priority because he is an amazing teacher too!
Love,
Mommio

Dear Mom,
I think you are a really good teacher. I like the way you do unit because we do reading then mapping. I think you choose good curriculum and books. You help us when we need help, like on our blog and on our math and grammar. I think you are good at teaching Max and Kiki their phonics and teaching Max to read and learn how to recognize new words.
I think I am doing okay at school. I think I have been writing more on my blogs. I like doing my math because I have been doing division. I think I should improve my focus on my math. I have been doing better at my alone work because I am not coming out of my room until I am done.
I think we should do all of our music at the same time instead of spreading it out. I think that would be better because we could work on doing duets with our different instruments. I think we should have longer art classes because we have fun doing art but we want to do more. I think Dad should do more guitar with me. We need to start doing Powerhouse with Dad. I would also like to have a photography day where we go outside and take picture of nature and animals. I want to have a unit study about cactus and studying what their parts are called and stuff like that.

Dear Mom,
I think that you are doing a good job as a teacher. I like it when you read to us at unit. I like that at art you read about the artist and paintings. I like that you help me improve my reading. I like that you are helping me improve my writing.
I am doing really good as a student. I am working really hard on my math, I get 90% or higher. I am now really good at reading. I have started to read Harry Potter, I really like it. I am a better at art and I have learned new skills.
I want to do a new unit on Canada. I want to do more cooking projects. I want to swim before school. I want to speed up on math. I want to do two lessons a day so I can get to the next level fast.
Love,
Mason
