Mommio: Cooking With Kids- Black Bottom Cupcakes

This week Marney and Gabe worked together to make some really delicious cupcakes from our Williams-Sonoma Sweet Treats cookbook.  The kids have all really enjoyed using this book to cook on their own, it gives them really clear directions and great pictures of the steps too.  Here they are reading over the recipe-
And here are the ingredients you need to make 24 of this yummy treat-
First they made the cream cheese filling by combining the first three ingredients and mixing it with a blender until smooth.  You are supposed to put it into a pastry bag after it is mixed- but we couldn't find one so they scooped it into a big Ziploc bag and set it aside for later.
Next they mixed all the liquid ingredients together.  We talked about why there was so much vinegar in the recipe- the baking soda needs an acid to react with to create the rising action.  And they both really loved the oil pattern on top of the bowl!

The next step was to mix all the dry ingredients (except the chocolate chips) together in a separate bowl.
Then they added the bowl of liquids to the dry bowl- slowly.  And mixed it all together.
The batter was really liquidy (it's supposed to be) so we filled up measuring cups with spouts so the kids could easily fill each muffin cup to 2/3 full.
They were supposed to push the pastry bag with the filling into the bottom of each cupcake and squeeze a small amount of filling out into the center of each one.  That didn't work for us, it all just stuck to the plastic- so instead I quickly squeezed a bit of filling right onto the top of each one and the kids put the chips on the top.
Here's what they looked like all ready to be baked at 350 degrees for 26-28 minutes.
Ta-da!  Gabe and Marney worked really well together to make us a delicious treat!
