Daddio: The Magic of Compost

Today we worked hard getting our garden cleared out and ready for planting in the next couple of weeks.  One of the things we decided to do was use two of our bins of compost to spread over the garden, and then till it into the soil.  So Gabe and I went out to check on how the compost looked.  We have a three bin system, but the second and third bins have been filled with yard waste, leaves and the tons and tons of branches that fell in our hailstorm one and a half years ago.  Here's a shot of the bins:

The second and third bins were full to the very top with sticks, grass and some kitchen waste a year ago.  But through the magic of heat, water and decomposition:

Whoa.  That compacted a whole bunch.  Here's some more shots of the compost.  The very top and sides were still covered with a thin layer of sticks, but underneath it was rich, beautiful dirt.  We had enough for two wheelbarrows full and spread it out over the entire garden.
