We are also learning to make our own powdered laundry detergent for our front-loading HE machine during our
No Impact week. There are lots of variations on how to make this on the internet, we used the one on this
blog. We will use this all week and decide at the end of the week whether we will switch back to using pre-made detergent, or stick to this new (cheaper, safer)stuff. The first load just came out of the washer and it was nice and clean!
Ingredients
1 bar shaved soap (we used Ivory)
1/2 cup Borax
1/2 cup washing soda
DirectionsShave the bar of soap, using a cheese grater, into a bowl. Put it into a container with a lid. Add other ingredients. Shake it up. Use 1 Tbs. per load.

I hope this works...I pay lots of money for Seventh Generations brand clothes soap...I will make my own if it works and is lots cheaper.
