Mommio: Art Class- Modern Art- Fauvism- Henri Matisse

Today in our Artistic Pursuits art class we studied our first artist of the Modern Art period, French artist
Henry Matisse (1869-1954).
Matisse, along with a small group of other artists, began an art movement called Fauvism in the early 1900's.  Fauve literally translates to "wild beast", which is how the public viewed Matisse and his strange, modern pieces of art.  Matisse loved color- and was not concerned with portraying life as it looks, but as he saw it through color and shape.  He especially enjoyed bright, bold colors without any mixing and later in his career he made beautiful paper cutout creations.  Today we read this short online article and took a look at many of his paper cutouts.
La Gerbe, 1953
The kids gathered supplies: lots of colored paper, scissors, glue and big white sheets of paper...and they started creating.  No rules, just cut and paste.  Any designs they chose.

Here are some of their paper cutouts.  Next time we move on to Picasso- one of my favorites!
