Mommio: Civil War Journals
The date is September 18, 1862 and your soldier is lucky to have survived the bloodiest one day battle in the history of America. The Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) in Maryland had 23, 000 casualties and although your soldier survived, he was wounded in battle and is now in a makeshift hospital tent being treated by Civil War nurses. Your soldier takes time while he is healing to write a journal entry. He can write about the battle, or at least what he remembers of it and he can also write about his wounds, and what it is like in the hospital tent. Think about what your soldier must have been feeling (physical and emotional) on this day in history. You can use information you have learned in our Civil War Unit Study this week and/or research online for more ideas of what it was like. Each soldier will earn 10 points if their journal entry is completed by Sunday night.
