Marney: The Best Things About Our Vacation
I like the Festival Park museum because it had a lot of cool stuff like pirate hats and ship wrecks.
Avery: The Best Things About Our Vacation
My favorite part about our vacation is when we went to the Wright Brothers Memorial and got our badges. We had to walk all the way up a hill to answer a question and then we walked all the way down.
I also love the FestivalPpark museum because you got to touch stuff and climb on things.
It was the best vacation ever!

Mommio: The Magical Rainbow Cake
Marney is having a Wizard of Oz birthday party this weekend for her 7th birthday and Nana found a recipe for an amazing rainbow cake. She and Marney spent yesterday morning making this beautiful tower of cakes:
Here is it all iced and with Oz pictures on top that Marney and Nana created on the computer:
And her it is taking up most of my refrigerator for the next two days:
Pictures of the cutting ceremony to come soon!

Connor: The Best Things About Our Vacation
My favorite day of our vacation was the day I became the champ of Lost Worlds. I like it because I was the champ and I didn't have to fight anyone. I have more favorite parts of the vacation like the day I wrote another New Zombie Dragon story. I also liked letter boxing days because of all the letter boxes we found. I find it very hard to pick just one day.

Mason: The Best Things About Our Vacation
My favorite things about our vacation were the aquarium, New Years Eve, walking on the beach and letter boxing. I like the aquarium because I like to see all the different fish.
My favorite part of New Years Eve is spending time with my family playing games and eating fondue.
I like walking on the beach because I love the ocean.
I like letter boxing because we all work together to hide it.

I loved our vacation. My favorite part was Festival Park. I liked the place where we listened for animals. I liked the boat. I liked it because it was fun. I loved the museum because you could touch the stuff. It was fun.

Daddio: Surgery Update
On the second to last day of our vacation in Nags Head, I started having new soreness and swelling at the site of my surgery even though a few days before I had no swelling or pain. We got back to town on Sunday night and I went to see my surgeon Monday afternoon. He informed me (as I expected) that my hernia repair had failed and that my intestine had broken through my stomach wall. Fortunately, however, it was not strangulated and I wasn't in any danger or needing immediate surgery.
He wanted to wait 3 weeks to do the surgery to let the swelling go down and scar tissue build up-- apparently this will increase the chances of a successful hold on the next surgery-- but I told him that it was extremely uncomfortable and somewhat painful, so we compromised on a week and a half. The surgery is now scheduled for a week from Friday. It's going to be basically the same surgery, but will be done outpatient, which is nice. I'm sure I'll have all sorts of great and hysterical pictures to post up from my recovery.

2009 Vacation: Day 12
All good things must come to an end. So it is with our vacation. Today is the last day and, after nearly two weeks of living in this beautiful house, we need to pack everything up and clean the place up before we leave at 5:00 am tomorrow morning. And everyone gets their share of the work, like Ava here, vacuuming the kitchen.
Gabe's job for most of the morning was to play and occupy the two youngest so that they weren't in the way while everyone else was cleaning up.
One of my jobs was to organize the DVDs while doing an impersonation of Reverend Jim from Taxi.
Christopher Lloyd? Taxi? C'mon people. Work with me here.
It took several kids to haul the boxes and bags down the stairs to the staging area near the front door-- next stop: Van Go!
We also had a bit of excitement mid day as Marney decided it was finally time for us to yank the tooth out of her head. Knowing that our attempts from the day before had failed, I promised to tell her a life-changing secret if she would let us try my method of pulling her tooth. My "method" involved me pinning her arms to her sides and holding her head back while someone yanked the tooth out of her mouth. Before agreeing, she wanted to know more about this secret. All I would tell her is that it was huge, would change her life, and only her older brothers and sister knew it. Reluctantly she agreed.
Success! We wanted a picture right away, but she wanted to rinse all the blood out of her mouth first.
Oh snap! Three teeth in one vacation! That has to be a record or something.
After everyone calmed down, we took her into another room and I told her the big secret about the Tooth Fairy and other related holiday friends. At first, as you see in this picture, she was concerned and didn't believe me.
After Jen confirmed that I was telling the truth (I'm the first to acknowledge that I have a credibility problem), she finally believed it and thought it was the coolest, most elaborate conspiracy secret ever.
We then let her tell Kiki the secret.
Kiki professed, "I knew it!"
That's it for now. Almost all the packing is done and we're just going to be lazy and try not to make too much of a mess for the rest of the day.
So this concludes our vacation. I won't be posting the trip home since we covered all that territory on the way out here. Check back next year for another exciting 100 Toes vacation adventure.

Avery: Bonus Day On Vacation
We were sooooo excited that we got an extra vacation day! We were going to go to Fort Raleigh, but then we wanted to stay home and do hot tub and walk on the beach. The best part is that we got to see a dolphin. It was called the Pilot Whale. It looked like a whale's head on a dolphin's body. Too bad we have to pack tomorrow and leave the day after that. I really wanted to stay and go to Fort Raleigh. And it might snow tonight.
2009 Vacation: Day 11
Plans changed today due to two significant events. The first was that when I woke up this morning, I felt as if something was wrong with my surgery. There's still significant swelling and, even though I'm having no new pain or discomfort, I'm concerned about it. Maybe walking 2.5 miles yesterday wasn't the best idea. My plan was to take it easy and don't do anything strenuous. I'm seeing my surgeon on Monday, so we'll find out then.
The other problem is that Jack woke up with a 101.5 fever. We think he has two teeth coming in. Anyhow, he felt like crap.
This morning we saw several pods of dolphins swim by and it was just about the coolest thing ever! I looked it up online and it said it was probably pilot whales (which are actually dophins) but I'm not sure they were big enough to be pilot whales. Anyhow, Jen was only able to get this one shot of one's fin as it was swimming.
Instead of going to Fort Raleigh, we decided to have a family day. We played Monopoly Deal and Scrabble Slam-- both games we got from Grandma and Grandpa when we stopped at their house on the trip here. They were great. The kids especially liked the scrabble game.
Jen then took the younger kids down to the beach to play and make sandcastles.
Holy cow! Are we about to lose our third tooth of this vacation? What the what? Marney (who just lost one of her butt teeth a couple of days ago) is about to lose her other butt tooth! The problem is that every time you start to pull it, she pushes your hands away and jerks her head back. I've taken a half dozen tries at it and she keeps foiling my attempts.
She even tried herself, with no success.
Even when her Nana tried to get her to do it over the Skype video call- she still couldn't do it.
Oh and by the way, the baby didn't feel much better by the end of the day.
Tonight: the college football championship!
