Daddio: I'm Drain Free!

I got my drain taken out today and the doctor thinks I've gotten rid of the infection.  He said there's a very slim chance that it will come back, but if that happens we'll know in the next week and they'll put me on different antibiotics.  It's just really good to have the drain out.  Yay me!

Connor: Blog of The Day

One day seven intelligent students invented a time machine and went back in time to ancient Egypt. When they got there the students spoke to king Tut. in their conversation the king had said that it was time to party.  All of the people in Egypt and the seven students and king Tut  started dancing.  Then the seven students got back into the time machine and went to 1776, the time of the Revolution.  They were happy to be back in America, but they had one more person with them.  It turned out that king tut had gone into the time machine with them.  King Tut was amazed by what he saw.  King Tut loved the sights of the Revolution.  King Tut freaked out when he saw middle class people in chariots.  The students decided that they needed to get Tut back to his time.  one of the students wanted to stay in 1776.  Later when they got to Egypt king Tut offered one of the students the ability to stay with him as his new assistant.  The rest of the students went back to their own time.  Then the five students left held hands and remembered their friends that were left behind in 1776 and ancient Egypt.

One day five men held hands on a deck.  One man had a square head. The others had circle heads.  They sat there and looked at the sun.  They had fun and said good bye.

One day there was a dog called Pup.  And Pup ran away to the lake and Pup saw some balloons in the water.  Some were circles, one was a square and Pup loved the square balloon.  So Pup tried to get the square balloon and Pup didn't  get the square balloon.  And so the owner didn't see Pup but then the owner came to the lake and saw Pup.  And the owner got the balloon and they had fun.

One day a little girl called Morgan went to a new park in Austin. She saw some kids playing on the swings. She went up to them and said " Can I play with you?" " Do you have a round head?", asked the oldest one. "No I have a square head." "Then no. You can not play with us.", said the older one. " Just because I'm different doesn't mean I can't play with you!", yelled Morgan. "Fine we will play with you. Let's all go to the merry go round." Then, at the end of the day Morgan became friends with the girls.

Granny Werner, my grandmother, died early this morning in St. Louis. I am so happy that she was able to meet all of the little toes. Our last visit with her sure was one we will never forget!

Connor: Blog of the day

I would tell the president that I think home school is better than public school. The reason for this answer is because I learn what I want to learn. In public school I had to learn everything even the things I didn't like. I learn that stuff anyway, but I think it is easier to learn all of those things in home school.

Mommio: Blog Of The Day

First, I think the answers the kids are giving are very interesting.  None of them (except Connor and Mason) have any experience with public school so their perspective is all unique to not knowing what kids do all day when they are not homeschooling.  They seem to all be saying that homeschool is easy and that's why it is better...and actually they are partially right.

Learning in a homeschool setting is easier for most kids because they are able to get an individual education.  They don't have to wait for other kids to catch up, or worry if the aren't catching on to something as quickly as their classmates.  If they are stuck on something they can take all the time they need reviewing it or trying many other approaches to learning it.  If they need a break, they take one. They are able to teach each other.  They don't have to spend so much actual time doing "school work"...but at the same time they are able to use everything we do throughout the day as an educational experience so there is far less wasted time than in a public school setting.  I know for a fact that for Connor and Mason, who spent many years in public school, learning at home has been "easier".  Mason is able to learn at his own pace and not feel pressured by the pace of classmates.  Not feeling "stupid" like he used to in class goes a long way towards making learning easier.  For Connor it is easier because he is more able to set his own schedule and he is also allowed to follow his interests.  In school he was very frustrated because he wanted to learn more about particular subjects and they never had time.  Now he reads history for fun and when he comes across something new that he is interested in he has the time and resources to learn more about it.

The other thing the kids are universally saying about why they think homeschooling is better is that they get to spend time with their family.  Even though that seems obvious, it is such a great answer!  In our country we are always hearing about how we all need better "family values" but people are too busy in their daily lives to really even spend time with the people they live with, there is no way to work towards family values if there is never family time.  Parents and children spend more time apart than they do together.  Kids are at school far more hours in a day than they are with relatives.  And when kids are at school with their siblings they still spend no time together since they are segregated by age for then entire day.  After school sports and other activities keep this trend going.  Everything is about each individual, never about the family.  I know that it is a great luxury that I am able to stay home with the kids...but it is one of the most positive things about homeschooling.  Our kids know each other, and Kyle and I are able to know them each in ways that we never would have.  If they were in public school each going their separate ways every day all of our relationships would be very different.

Obviously President Obama, and others who have not been exposed to homeschooling, would need to take some time just experiencing it before they could see the benefits.  Every family does it a different way.  It's also not for everyone.  But when done well, homeschooling has all the advantages of an individualized education that public school teachers are always wishing they had the time to give to their own students.

I think it is better if you homeschool because you can be home.  I get to be with my brothers and sisters.

Gabe: Blog Of The Day

I think homeschool is better because it's less work.

I would tell him that even though you don't do a lot of school, we can still learn a bunch of Spanish, math, grammar, and stuff like that. Also you get to spend more time with your family and you get more free time. My favorite part is when we get free time in the afternoon.

Mommio: Family Games

Yesterday afternoon we tried to make good use of our time being stuck inside with germs and spent it playing some new family games together.  We enjoy playing games at our house, but it is always hard to find ones that everyone can play (well, Max and Jack are still at the bystander stage) so we often try out new ones.  Yeterday we got these two:

We played Pictureka first in teams of four.  It is a pretty fast paced game where you look for certain items in the picture card board.  The first to earn six cards wins- that was Kiki and I this time.  Wow- she was so excited!  Here are a few shots of the game play.  Yes, Kyle probably should have been wearing a face mask.

Blokus was played twice-  Daddio and Gabe tried it out first with us watching to see how it works.  It is very simple, you are just placing your colored tiles in a certain way until you can't play anymore.  The one with the fewest tiles left at the end wins.  There is strategy involved, but the puzzle type- you need a good eye again so see where the various pieces can fit for future moves, like checkers.   Then we played with four teams- me, Marney, Connor & Mason, Avery & Gabe.  Everyone enjoyed it and did great without help- especially Marney who was all on her own but seemed to understand it right away.  I did win, but I think this is the type of game I won't win often!

Fun was had by all for several vomit-free hours and it was a nice afternoon. We will play these often!

If President Obama asked you to tell him about homeschooling and whether it's better than public school, what would you tell him?

Mommio: Blog Of The Day

I would love it if my Granny could read our blog.  I know that she would get a kick our of the things the kids write and would really enjoy the pictures and feeling like she is a part of our lives.

I would also love for people who think homeschooling is a bad thing to read our blog and see what it is all about, and that our kids have very full, educational and happy lives.

I think that Mary and LD should read the blog because it is cool when someone reads it.  They like to know what we do.

I would like Mary and LD to read the blog. They will like it because it is fun

Connor: Blog of The Day

I think that my answer would be George Washington.  Because of the house presidential elections we've had.  Although Washington isn't my only answer. I really think that Loki, or any of our old dogs for that matter, would love to find out what's up.  I just can't choose one person as an answer.  I know I would want Grangran to read the blog and see how much we miss her.  I think Beethoven would be amazed of the kid's playing the recorders.
