Marney: Math

I have been doing math on the computer for about a year and a half. So I wanted to show you guys something that I just learned in math. The thing that I wanted to show you guys was division.  I learned it in math and I have been having a hard time with it so mom would help me.  But now I  think I got the hang of it.  Here is a picture of some I made up that were just like the other ones.

Djibouti

Djibouti is a small country in east Africa on the boarder of the Red Sea. Djibouti is only 8,958 square miles. Djibouti was very short on food from their crops for three months because there was hardly any rain at all. They would fish for food sometimes, but they tried their best to grow crops of fruits and vegetables for people. 97 percent of the people in Djibouti are Muslim (about 740,000). The 6 percent that are left are mostly Christan. The life span for most people that live there is around 60 years old for both males and females because of the lack of doctors and the food shortage. There are about 18 doctors per 100,000 people. Most of the education there is influenced by France. There are 81 public schools, 24 registered privet schools, 12 secondary schools and 2 vocational schools there. 21.1 percent of the woman can go and 29.0 percents of the men can go to the schools. I personally think that the more women should be able to go to the schools.

 Kenya

The place I chose was Kenya and I am going to blog a bunch about Kenya. I learned that they discovered a giant crocodile fossil underground. Also that it was not that far underground. It was like twenty feet under ground. They also found out it was over 200 years old. How they did that was they took it to a lab and looked at it. There use to be a hunting group in Kenya because there were a bunch of animals like deer and sheep sometimes. Then they stopped that stuff like 100 years ago. People still go and visit Kenya and visit museums. Then when they go home they say it was so much fun there and they had a great time. I think it would be a cool place to go.

Daddio: 7/27/11 Blog of the Day

For today's blog of the day, I want you to write a report on an African country of your choice.  Go to this wikipedia page that lists the different sovereign countries in Africa.  Choose one and then research that country.  Then write your report.

Remember that a report is not just random facts.  It needs to actually be a discussion of the country that you chose and some interesting things that you learned about it.  Don't just list what you learned, but actually discuss them-- talk about why the facts are important, or why they were interesting to you.  Also make sure to post a picture of the flag of the country you chose.

Mommio: Word Challenge

Write a sentence for each word.  

Anyone who can come up with a complete sentence that makes sense for each word gets a dollar!

curmudgeon- (noun) cranky person
The old man was a notorious curmudgeon who snapped at anyone who disturbed him for any reason.


cursory- (adjective) hastily done, superficial
The copyeditor gave the article a cursory once-over, missing dozens of errors.

daunt- (verb)to discourage, intimidate
She tried hard not to let the enormity of the situation daunt her.

For today's blog of the day, I want you to write a cinquain poem.  A cinquain poem is a five line poem that has special rules for each line of the poem.  Here are the rules:

Line 1 - a one word title Line 2 - a 2 word phrase that describes your title or you  can just use two words Line 3 - a 3 word phrase that describes an action relating to your title or just actions words Line 4 - a 4 word phrase that describes a feeling relating to your topic or just feeling words Line 5 - one word that refers back to your title

So here's an example of a cinquain poem:

Mommio: Big Fat Jerk

Today was a really rough day for Marney and she ended up yelling at me A LOT.  Enough that she was sent away for quite a while.  But when she came back she quickly earned my forgiveness with this heartfelt letter (which she gave me permission to share).  She's been as sweet as can be ever since!

Mommio: Art Class- Impressionists: Monet Studies Light

Today in art class I introduced the kids to French Impressionist Claude Monet and we learned how his studies in light influenced the entire Impressionist movement in art history. 

 Monet liked to get out of the studio and paint things as he saw them in person.  He often made series of paintings of the same subject under different conditions: different times of day, different weather and seasons would change the entire way he saw the subject.  Because Monet was trying to capture a moment as he saw it he stopped trying to paint slowly, carefully and taking time to mix colors and instead started to throw layer upon layer of quick strokes on his paper to represent the subject in that very moment.  Details were no longer important to Monet- and other artists began to follow this style.  We took a look at a series of paintings he did of the Rouen Cathedral in France.

 By painting the colors that appeared on the gray stone cathedral in different lighting he showed the French public an entirely new way to view one of their most beloved landmarks.  He chose to paint a subject that was familiar to everyone and give it new interest.

For the art project today the kids used their gouche paints to create a series of seasonal paintings of a tree.  They imagined one tree and how it would look during each of the seasons and then used layers of paint to create the look they wanted.  

Here they are working hard- learning to apply lighter colors over the darker ones.

 And here are their completed tree series.

 Next week we will study Renoir and his use of brush strokes in portraits.

Mason: Tae Kwon Do

Yesterday was my Tae Kwon Do test. I was nervous because my dad was watching me. The hardest part of the test was the sparing. When the test was over I passed it. On Wednesday I will get my yellow belt.

Avery: Photography

My photography has been going really well lately! I have taken a lot of pictures of animals, nature, people and myself, but right now I am taking pictures of colors. Mom gives me one color of the rainbow every school day. Then I have to take pictures of anything in that color. So far I have gotten, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. I have 9 or 10 pictures of things in those colors. Here are some of the pictures.

Tobe's Life

One day there was a little boy who was called Tobe and he loved to play with his friends. He was 5 years old. He went to call his friends and asked them to come over and play and they said they would.  His friends came over to play at four o'clock.  They played a bunch and they got all tired out when they were done playing.  So they went inside and had a snack.  Tobe's dad got home at six o'clock and Tobe went to say "Hi"  and his dad said back "Well, you suck".  So Tobe said "Take that back"  and so his dad said "I am in a bad mood, just do not talk to me".  So Tobe just went with his friends and played.

When Tobe Was Six
One day when Tobe was six he had to go somewhere with his mom but he did not know where they were going. That day Tobe's mom woke him up at five o'clock and he didn't want to wake up but his mom made him.  She made him wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush his teeth, pack hair stuff and get in the car in only an hour.  Then they got in the car and drove for 30 seconds. At that point he got out his notebook and wrote in it.  This is what he wrote.

I want to know what mom is doing. She is being so lame and she is going 

somewhere. She is funny and mean right now.

He also wrote this.

Mom is lame and funny.

When Tobe Was Seven

At that point Tobe figured out that they were going to go to a hair place.  So he said to mom that he wanted out of the car. So he got out of the car with the piece of paper from his notebook and he dropped it, not meaning to. He got back in the car and they drove away.  Tobe looked in his notebook and the piece of paper was not there. He saw it out of the car and he was worried.

When Tobe Was Eight 

At that point they got to the hair place and Tobe got out of the car and went inside. Tobe's mom got out of the car and went inside.  Tobe got his hair brush out,  his comb, and he got his hair cut.  After that his mom got a hair cut and they got back in the car. A few hours later they pulled over because someone knocked on their window. So they stopped their car.

When Toby Was Nine

Tobe's mom unrolled the window and the guy said "Hi. I am Jello and I found this on the side of the road. Is it yours?" Tobe said "Yes, that is for me and I need it." Tobe's mom rolled up the window and she said "What does that say Tobe?"  Tobe said "I can not read this."  Tobe tried to read. He said that it said...

Funny and lame is mom.

The rest of the card was ripped. Tobe and his mom got home then.

Kiki: The Pony Race

There was a pony racing a pony to get to the dog at the finish line. The pony looked up and saw the pony. The pony poops on the pony and it was a tie. Both of the ponies won the race.

Gabe: Sunflowers

Four months ago we planted some sunflowers seeds we bought from the store .  About two weeks ago we went out to check the garden and there were giant blooming sunflowers. So we cut them down. Now we have four sunflower heads on our desk drying out so we can roast the sunflower seeds. Here are some pictures.

Mommio: CSA July 20th

The hot Texas weather is effecting everyone so we got a little less this week (I'm missing the red potatoes) but there's still some great stuff here and their first tiny melon of the season.  It all smells great! Plus Ariel gave us some much appreciated advice on when to pick our watermelons.
